The Truth About Success

February 13, 2008 · Filed Under Business Basics

I’m about to address one of the biggest obstacles standing in the way of you making money right now.

Being successful at anything you choose to do requires hard work and consistency. I know that in the Internet marketing field, use of those words is a big no-no, but it’s the undeniable truth.

Without an understanding that you may have to work for your success you might think there’s some secret formula out there that’s going to magically put money in your pockets simply because you know it.

All you have to do is look at how many products you’ve bought with the expectation that if you bought it, you would be able to turn your business around with the “new secrets” you thought you were going to learn to see I’m telling the truth.I know you’ve seen some people who have hit the net full speed with their first product and had all kinds of crazy success.

Many times it’s a fluke and it’s not something that person can ever reproduce because since their first product launch did so well, they get trapped into thinking that what they did was easy, forgetting all they time and effort they put into everything that got them there.

It’s easy to get trapped into thinking that success is easy if you just have the right “knowledge” on your side. That’s the big myth pushed on you by slick marketers who only want to sell you stuff.

But the truth of the matter is, success doesn’t always come easy even if you know the best “secrets” out there.

Anytime I need money, there are always a few basic concepts I can rely on that will always produce profits in a short amount of time without me having to spend any money on advertising.

The only reason I know about these concepts is because I read pretty much everything I could get my hands on until one day things just started to make sense, but it wasn’t easy to get to this point.

When I started out I had no money, no business or marketing background, no support from my family or friends, no computer knowledge and well, no computer.

That’s not the easiest way to start but I didn’t care. I wanted to be my own boss and be in control of my own life as much as possible.

Period.

Now, making money online isn’t a dream for me anymore simply because I refused to let anything stand in the way of what I wanted. It did take me two solid years to start making money however.

The most important thing I’ve learned about what it takes to be successful is that you can’t give up. Ever. Success has a way of waiting until 99.9% of the people who were looking for it give up in frustration before it decides to show up at your feet.

Sincerely,
Derrick VanDyke

Hey Derrick this is one of the most honest posts I have seen in a long time! It is the truth, that success is not easily attained unless you work at it. I really enjoyed this post keep posting info like this and soon everyone will be here checking you out!!

    Thanks for the information,
    Eldon Audas

As an ‘unemployed’ independent contractor since 1971, I know just how tough it can be without ‘job security’ … and loved every minute of it! Now, as a newbie marketer, I don’t expect many “secrets” to pop up: but I love that you’re willing to put up some guideposts so that others aren’t required to re-invent the information highway from scratch (for which read ignorance)!

    Hi Derrick,

We are singing from the same hymn sheet here. I only ever expect to get out an equivalent result based on the amount of effort that I have personally put in.
I think that we all recognize that the majority of failures in our business are due to a lack of focus, with too many people program hopping. The problem is that the majority of people are still doing it.

It speaks volumes for You Derrick that You hung in there above all the odds and became successful. Even more so if You started from nothing so “Good On Ya” Sir.

    Hi Derrick

I totally agree, it’s just like baking a cake,
once you have the main ingredients all will go
well, but miss one out, or sway from the recipe
and flop! Your cake wont rise!

I also believe a lot of sales online are made
through reputation, so make sure you treat your
customers well, and they will sing your praises.

    Sally :)

    Good evening Derrick,

I too have been in the independent contracting business since the early 70’s, enjoying the freedom spoken of by Greg.

Really enjoy repair and remodeling / custom carpentry and mill work.

I also am looking to make my living from the net.

In learning of humility and integrity it has become clear to me that where this attribute is missing narcissistic mediocrity will always fill the void left behind.

As long as you are willing to stand upon the basic and solid foundation of integrity; expressing “true” truth as opposed to “perceived” truth your audience will always respond positively, those who don’t have a very short sited concept of honest reporting.

Thank you for this breath of “fresh air” among so much pollution.

I applaud your courage and pray that your “light” does not diminish, for where truth exists, deception and misappropriations find little comfort.

    Bravo

I started out the same way and it took me two years to make any money worth mentioning -w/o my own computer. I frequented the public library to use their pc’s so much that other people thought I worked there…but it was worth it!

Although,I don’t consider myself to be ‘top-gun’ of internet marketing…from helping others out on forums,I’ve found that I know a whole lot more than I give myself credit for…the best advice I can give right now at the moment is the same as this post: Don’t give up and always have the mindset of a humble student.

Only then will you be ready young ‘grasshoppers’:-)

    Hi Derrick,

First of all, I want to say thank you for the inspiration. It’s a real rough ride and I have yet to see results. Internet marketing is not for the faint of heart.
I know that the ones who succeed are either those who are extremely lucky and those who don’t quit.
    So I’m not quiting.
If it’s going to be a long road, then let it be. I’ll take my steps one at a time, eventually I’ll get there :)

  9. Happy Riches on February 13th, 2008 6:28 pm

Derrick, What I like about you is your honesty in this post.

Actually I think that you have an exceptional program, even there is room for improvement.

The thing that I have always had difficulty is the term “hard work” because I always equate “hard work” with physical labor, whereas anything other than that is really easy in comparison. Maybe this is my interpretation.

However, I agree that we have to strive to succeed or, if not strive, and probably better, have the will to succeed. This is indeed the case, if we want to be a Mark Spitz or a Fred Smith or a Carl Lewis or a Henry Mancini or a Roger Federer or a Cher Bono or even like Ewen Chia.

I am only new to Internet marketing and have to say that of the programs that I have looked at, Derrick, yours was the most refreshing I have encountered. For the internet newbie, you have put together a powerful educational tool.

Success only comes to those that hit the wall and keep on trucking. Just know this-lead me fine, follow me fine but, watch out if you get in my way, you might get run over. Failure is not an option.

    Hi Derrick.
Like most of the other folk who have made comment here I very much appreciate all that you have on this Blog, not just the one article.

I too am very new at trying to make a crust from the internet, though I have tried many times and been bitten just as many. lol put it down to experience.

I have just completed my very first article to go to the directories for distribution and am surprised to find how close the theme of the article comes to your own sentiment of an honest approach.
With your allready given permission I will use some of the ideas you have expressed on this blog to formulate further articles.

Thanks for being there Derrick and for getting me started on this serious but pleasant business.

  14. Ray Patrick on February 13th, 2008 8:50 pm

    Hey Derrick,

I have been reading all the comments here and they are beautiful.

There is nothing greater than the power of the individual that is able to hold to a vision and feed that vision with action even against all the odds, any one that can do that, in my eyes is someone to keep near by, as their vision and strength is something that can only beam like a lighthouse around them.
It seems that so many really do abandon their hard work just at the very time when it would begin to bare some fruit but again this is the testing hour, the moment that makes or breaks us.
I have yet to face that hour, I don’t know if I ever will have to face it though, as I could be doing this for 100 years, might not get rich but still remain fascinated by the whole experience of online marketing and the ”things it has shown me”, yeh, true that, very true, as recently I made a decision not to think big or aim high and not to aim at anything in particular with my online marketing ventures, yup lol, no targets, no deadlines lol … just lazily doing little bits here and there, but ”always doing them ”each and every day!”
Not so long ago I decided to play it cool as though it was all going to be a cakewalk, taking each day and doing no more than short and simple tasks while listening to music, relaxing and eating, this way I was sure of getting lots of little tasks done that became big tasks completed at the end of the month…..this was the coolest way for me to know that I was taking action without having to think and stress along the way unlike those that think big and aim high thinking that it can all be achieved over night.
Working like this I make money, not much, but money, in time I will make more, not much but more and as long as I do a little task each day, I know I am on my way.

Don’t ever think that any automated tool can make you rich until you have personally sweated a little to automate that tool ” yourself ”.

    Great post as always Derrick!

    Ray Patrick

Derrick - I agree with you 100%. Hard work and consistency are very important components of success. And what we all as entrepreneurs must understand is that success is intentional. It rarely happens by circumstance. What I mean by this is that we also must have a plan in order to succeed. And as you are well aware of, your 30 day challenge is “spot on” as it relates to having a SMART plan for success. It is quite obvious you understand this but if I may, I would like to briefly explain the SMART acronym to your readers. If you look at your 30 day “action” plan closely, you will see that it is Specific, Measureable, Aligned, Realistic and follows a Timeline. Derrick, it appears to me you are one who possesses the desire, passion, work integrity and consistency of following a plan to achieve success. You go above and beyond any other internet marketer I’ve seen on the web in sharing your “secrets” of internet marketing success. And it is for these reason’s, I continue to have faith in your system and your leadership. Keep up the good work, sir.

    My regards,
    Steven Brubaker

    Derrick,

Awesome post! So many people think that reading a book
will make you money. No, its knowledge that is applied that makes you money. You become aware then you get an intention (set your goal) then you must ACT to achieve it. You must ACT with the intention that you will NEVER GIVE UP!

Thanks again for a great post!

    Hi Derrick
    You’re totally rigth.
After almost two year on IM, I’m having my first failure on IM. I’d tried, read and learning till now everything, I could afford to get success in a persistent and continuous way, but seems that nothing works. But I didn’t give up, and I won’t give up.
I know that I will get success on IM no matter what goes on for now, I feel in the deep of my soul that I’m in my way to success, just the right time didn’t reach yet.

Hi Derrick,I just started looking into your system and it looks and sounds great….but yet I am still very ify on all of this.I`m sure you understand.I have had so many false promises about people saying,we will be there for you all the way….aha,right…..I have lost a good bit of money over the years on these internet businesses, and its had to trust for me….I` at a point rite now wher I amout of work, again, and I am struggling so bad finacially,I cant even provide for my family….I want to try your system so bad,but again,`i`m very ify,and very broke..and I have VERY little computer or internet knowledge….what do you suggest…..Ive read all the comments on the blog and it sounds good, but again,i`ve heard it all before….sorry but after getting screwed around so many times…..make a believer out of me….like i said,i have no computer experience so i dont know if it will work for me.I do appreciate your time and patience.

    Hi Derrick

Your post should be posted every where so that every budding internet entrepreneur could see and understand the truth.

I was made redundant from a career in Finacial services and have made every mistake possible, including seemingly buying every product. Now don’t get me wrong some of these are good products, but if you get into the habit of buying too many at once you just get swamped and confused on which way to turn.

If you fall into this same trap your bank balance is reduced and your not earning a penny. I agree with Derrick in that occasionally some one comes along and seems to be a star over ninght, but most of the time you’ve got to find a system that you beileve in and work at it what ever is thrown at you, the ups and downs.

I’m still doing this now, my knowledge and expertise is improving, but traffic generation in volume does and is taking time.

Ultimately you have to attach your colours to a flag and run with it whatever the opposition to what you are doing and negavtivity, believe if you keep working you will have the last laugh.

In summary, a brilliant, honest and true reflection of the realities of getting going on the internet

    Kind Regards

    Chris

It really is hard to filter out all the b.s. that is out there in the Internet Marketing World. Hundreds if not thousands of Guru’s are saying you can become successful. Who are we really to believe in? Derrick sounds believable at leat in my eyes.

  24. Rodney on February 14th, 2008 1:14 pm

Yes, couldn’t agree more! I know a great saying from a true adventurer,”When order goes in confusion blows off.” L Ron Hubbard. So the thing to do is not to give up, just keep going and eventually the confusion will leave, and one will be left with order. Also when is confused it is only usually because of a word not understood, and let’s face it there’s so many words in IM not defined in any particular glossary. So you just go back to where you thought you were doing well, and right there will be a word you didn’t understand. Understand the word and then continue on from that point. The number of times through equals certainty.

  25. The Credit Robbers on February 14th, 2008 2:04 pm

    Derrick,

I’ve been following along monitoring your success for a couple of years now. Quite frankly i’m not sure exactly why you decided to write this post, but it sure hits home with me.

For what seems an eternity to me i’ve been buying every info product and spiffy software product that’s come along, pretty much laying waste to my hard drive.

In all of that i’ve found a lot of useful education, much of which i’ve tried to apply in one form or another over the past several years.

But the fact of the matter is that so far i’ve been a complete failure at turning all of that knowledge into profits online. Stay with me now because this is a story many readers will no doubt resonate with, and it’s right on theme with your thoughtful post on the matter.

After hundreds of hours in coaching sessions and thousands of dollars in costs, it finally dawned on me that this idea of name branding myself was not really my cup of tea.

I bought into the idea of a membership site and hooked up with a couple of partners and spent months building a great membership site with constantly renewable products. For clarity i’ll even reveal that it’s in the horse racing industry. It’s not just one of those touting picks services, it’s actually a college to teach interested folks how to profit at the racetrack. We even recently created a full day 8 hour course on handicapping and wagering, now availabe for sale.

The problem with that venture appears that we’ve picked a niche that’s hard to reach the limited number of potential members. Perhaps it will become a success, or maybe it will remain a measley return on investment.

Since after all of the time spent building and maintaining that venture proved insufficient for sustainable revenue, I then decided to embark on creating a product in another niche entirely.

This is when it gets interesting. I’d been following the changing tide in the mortgage markets and had been monitoring a successful marketer in one of the real estate niches. I’d learned of him through an affiliate relationship in the personal development field.

Anyway to make a long story shorter, I happened to listen in on a conference call he had with an expert in the credit industry. As with any of these conference calls, it of course ended in a pitch for their credit repair services. But something really struck home with me regarding several of the things revealed in that call.

It was so compelling that I actually got lucky and obtained an mp3 of the call and quickly spent a few days transcribing it. The next thing I knew, a book was in the works … with (i’m sure you’d be pleased) tons of great backend products.

So I spent the next few months writing and researching a comprehensive book called “The Credit Robbers, it’s NOT just the Identity Thieves you should be worried about.” It’s about a lot fleecing of the public going on with regard to credit scores.

I even created a companion book to go along with it called “Identity Theft Protection & Recovery”. Even that was set up as a great marketing tool with a strong nationwide service as the backend.

Here’s the big problem that I hope you’ll address for all of us here. I’ve got an excellent project in a large niche with lots of buyers (finally). I’ve set up a blog (creditrobbersblog.com), done lots of SEO work, writing blog posts and articles on a daily basis. Got the newsletter thing going and several services to get backlinks to the blog and website.

Built a comprehensive website with split testing going on constantly. But that’s hardly an issue to have done any of that right if there’s no traffic.

The HOT spot is glowing with two JV partners including the nationwide Identity Theft insurance company and the top credit services company in the U.S. who intends to do a broadcast to a large list.

Waiting for something to happen is by far the most painful part of this process. What do you do to speed things up? Since i released the book at the beginning of the year we’ve had little more than a handful of sales at the $27 price tag, and the ID Theft book is given as a bonus.

My question to you is, given all of this effort, how in the world do you turn such a project into success? Forget overnight, while that would be nice, i’d like to at least see some steady growth and sales. What would you suggest?

    BoB, a.k.a., Robert Miller, Ph.D.

Thanks for your input, i’ve learned to value your insight as a regular reader of your emails and posts.

    Hey Derrick-
You got THAT right, brother..most folks won’t stir off their comfy chairs to DO what necessary to make this WORK (note the BIG letters ;)!
And it IS WORK..just as challenging as busting boulders..but you do it with your mind, not your body.
I’m doing EVERYTHING I know how to to try to make this thing work..and due to my dilligence and persistance, I KNOW I’ll come out on top.

  28. Bill Ortell on February 14th, 2008 3:17 pm

100% agree, and I promote the same mentality… so many people feel that their success and financial freedom comes in “having a hard drive full of products” - while I’m not lavishly successful, I try to take the product and DO something with them right away - otherwise it’s just a waste of time, money and resources (stealing from my family).

That’s why in my new eBook I put in it a 10-page Mini-Strategy for 7-Days - putting people’s feet to the fire. It works! I’ve gotten MORE positive results from THOSE last 10 pages, then I have in the previous 90 pages. :) lol

Well put, Derrick - well put!

  30. Kay on February 14th, 2008 4:51 pm

    Derrick,
Thank you, thank you, thank you. This is just the wake up call so many of us needed. For three years I’ve gone from one “so easy, even a ten year old can do it” site to another. I now have so many products downloaded that my computer groans. Half of them I haven’t even read, so obviously I still haven’t made a cent. I joined affiliate cash secrets nearly 2 months ago and was very half hearted in my efforts whilst at the same time still looking at every other opportunity that sounded easier, better and would pay me so much more.(I even paid up and joined some). To be honest, I was about to cancel my ACS membership and quit.
Your article could not have been better timed for me.
Now I’m on day 3 of the 30 day challenge and for the first time, I’m focused and actually doing something to help myself. Thank you.

Hi,I hear from the left and right how the process of obtaining success online should be hard and long. When you are doing something you like it should add you much more power. When you climb to the Everest you do not see the top till the last point when the whole world is under your feet. You can meet the snow storm, the avelanche, the fog on the way and only people who do not care and keep moving will on the Top.If you do not have passion inside of you and do not believe in success you make sure the Everest is not the choice for you and there are no chance at all to see the world under your feet.Be patient, confident, passionate and have fun on the run.It is not 9-5 job.It is not newspaper delivery job at midnights. It is creating a base for your successful life. What could be better when you put brick by brick moving the walls of your home up?
I wish all of you luck and confidence!
It doesn’t really matter who you are and from what corner of the world you came.If You can see yourself on the Top and nothing can turn you from this road,-this make a difference.
Thank you, Derrick for sharing your knowledge with us!

Hi Derrick, I don’t think I’ve ever said to you that I think you are a great guy. In all honesty, I think you’re a very caring individual who really wants to help beginners to start a business on the Internet and not feel like they’re entering into a complete quagmire. It still feels like one sometimes, but as you said, “You can learn anything on the Net.” I’m finally into one fab business and within a few days will have 2-3 more. Some-
thing finally clicked, it took long enough, eh? There’s no reason why I can’t do this, and I think I jumped the final hurdle. The truth is “I was really scared” to take
the first step. I’m on my way to the next internet fortune. I hope you’ll send me a letter once in a while to keep up my morale. There’s bound to be bad times.
Best of Luck to you and your future plans.
