The One Thing That Could Be Holding You Back

September 5, 2007 · Filed Under Affiliate Marketing, Business Basics, Traffic Generation

Take a few moments to read this post because I’m about to share with you the *one thing* that could be holding you back from building a successful online business…

There are many different ways to make money online.

Just to name a few…

1. You can be a traffic broker, buying traffic from Google and sending it to affiliate sites for commissions…

2. You can create content sites with Adsense ads and try to get listed in the search engines…

3. You can put up a squeeze page, build a list of prospects and recommend new affiliate products every week…

4. You can sell your own products, start an affiliate program and get other people to send you traffic…

But you can’t do everything and expect to do anything well.

I believe the *one thing* that stands between you and the online business you dream about is focus…

It’s funny (kinda)…

When people ask me why they’re failing online, I offer to look at what their currently doing. And 9 times out of 10, they send me to a web page promoting at least 20 different affiliate products with flashing banners everywhere.

You know what the underlying problem is?

Lack of focus.

The point is…

Choose *one* proven business model and stick with it until it’s profitable.

Choose *one* proven method of generating traffic and stick with it until it’s profitable.

Stop jumping from one thing to the next and giving up before you actually see some results.

You may have to…

  • lose a lot of money on Google…
  • write over 100 articles…
  • make 100 forum posts…
  • create 100 Adsense pages…
  • get 100 subscribers on your list…

…before you ever see your first sale.

But if you stick with it and stay focused on your goal, you will see results.

Guaranteed.

To your success!

    You got me there.

You should read that article every morning. And then it would be much easier to stay focus.

    Thank you Derrick

Good job with the article Derrick. It was well written and oh, so true! I fell into the “too much” trap when I first began online. It wasn’t until I began to focus my attention on just a few areas that things started happening for me.

    Derrick:

You just throw a strike. Yes, I agree with you. Focus lacking is like a disease. I know because I am ill with it. A few years on the internet and still not making money more than once on a while. Why? Among other things, the reason you wrote about in your article. I acuse myself of being unproductive. How many times I have been in position of throwing the towell and say good bye to the internet marketing. But I still keep to be here. Maybe with the hope of things to change soon for better.

I really admire the knowledge, creativity and iniciative of persons like you and Tod Gross, and many others. I should say maybe that I also have envy of you guys, but like we say in Mexico (and I suppose the same thing is said all over the world), envy… envy of the good one.

Thank you and my best regards.

    Derrick:

What you have posted is so simple yet so true,
I know this because I, like many other ‘newbies’
have been down that path already and I have learned
    from this mistake.

What is difficult for beginners is the fact that once
you buy that first affiliate product, you are constantly
bombarded with subsequent offers that are all better than
the last product, and “this product will show you what the others don’t” etc. So for many it is hard to stay focussed
    on one product.

As I have found from experience, it is essential to stay
focussed on one product at a time in order to make any progress, otherwise it just becomes a big confusing mess.

    Thanks Derrick,

    Best regards,

    Thank you Derrick,:)

You hit the nail on the head with that article! I believe that is exactly what we all do when new online, It took me a couple of years to figure that out! But agree 100%…

    Dianne Kneller,

P.S. ACS, was one I came across a loong time ago, but when you mentioned Auto Responder, I didn’t even know what that was at the time & ran a mile, LOL,
Then spent the next two years, figuring it all out the Hard Way… duh! All good now though!

    Thanks again. :)

You have an excellent way of getting to the point. The emails I get from you are always clear and your ideas agree with my own thoughts. Just this morning I sent an email to my list in a similar vein.

But there is one other thought regarding “focus” that is not mentioned in your article. It has to do with the constant barrage of distractions promoting ‘this’ or ‘that’ success formula. And that is nowhere more pronounced than in free exchange marketing.

Transitioning from one of the failing 95% with a consumer mindset to one of the 5% with a successful business mindset is as simple as CHANGING your mindset.

Then you can stop jumping in and out of every new program trying to see what works. You can stop being a BUYER and be a SELLER.

Choose ONE thing you believe in wholeheartedly, believe in yourself, stand behind what you are promoting and then… SELL it with confidence.

Thanks for your work and the opportunity to share.

    All the best,
    Scott “The Dragonfly” Douglas

    Hello Derrick
A big thank you from Switzerland for this “motifying” article. I guess “lack of focus” is one of the major problems, especially as a “newbie” to the internet. Since with this article you’re speaking “out of my heart” i just had to publish it on my blog.
Looking forward to any mail from you and wishing you much success.
    Sincerely,
    Gerda

You are very right Derreck. Most of us are guilty as charged of affiliate prostitution and that is why most of us are unsuccessful in a great deal. I am chewing that daily.

I just had to laugh when I read this. All newbies start this way.I know I did. I have a blog about “Me and My First PC” It has brought a lot of laughs to some people and a rude awakening to some who were trying to juggle too much and getting nowhere. Your articles are a life line for people like me. Everyone should have a plan and stick to it.
I hope to read more of your great articles in the near future. Thanks for making my day!

    Bullseye!

I agree “Focus” is the main thing in internet marketing..Without “focus”, there’s no point in purchasing more and more latest software and ebooks that teach you to make money online..In fact, I’m one of those people who got infected by the “lack of focus” disease when i first started out my online business..Prepare to lose out BIG TIME without it.. I just hope all the newbies out there get to read this..”Goals+ Focus = Success”

Kudos to you Derrick..This article is simple yet so important to all internet marketers..

Hi! I am a “student” of Affiliate Cash Secrets, I am trying very hard to implement the knowledge, and I am trying very hard to discipline and focus myself, this is the hardest part. You are 100% accurate, and I have some hope, today I got my first 2 customers from the first campaign. I promise to keep going with the same intensity, and hope for the best.
    Thanks a lot Derrick
