Okay, back to my story…

7 Ways To Squeeze More Profit From Your Opt-In List

The money is in the list…right? You’ve read all the success stories about people who’ve built a small fortune with opt-in lists. So you decided to create one of your own (good decision).

• You set up a squeeze page with your freebie and your opt-in form and started promoting your list everywhere possible.

• You grabbed some great articles from an ezine directory and sent them to your list.

• You found a popular product at ClickBank, sent out a solo ad and waited for the sales fill up your inbox.

You felt the success welling up inside you!

Then reality strikes like a lightning bolt…

Nothing…Not one sale!

What could have gone wrong?

Why have others succeeded where you have failed?

The secret to squeezing more profits from your opt-in list is building a relationship with your subscribers. The following tips will help you establish friendship and trust with your readers so they’ll listen to what you have to say and act on your recommendations.

1. Establish the terms of your relationship. This starts at the squeeze page. Tell your subscribers what they will get and that they will need to confirm their subscription to download your report. Assure them that they will not be bombarded with product promotions. And of course, you will not share their email address with anyone.

2. Let your subscribers get to know you. The first contact is critical and will set the tone for your relationship. Tell your story. Let your subscribers know who you are, where you live, how you got started online, what you’ve accomplished and most importantly, how you can help them accomplish their goals. This bonding period will determine how they react when they see future email messages from you in their inbox.

3. Tell your subscribers exactly what to expect from you. Let them know up front what types of content you’ll be sending them. Tell them how often will you be sending emails. If you send special articles or reviews on Friday, let them know. Tell them what to look for in the subject line like the name of your ezine or an acronym. Make sure they know that you will be recommending products and services that you personally use to run your business. List all the benefits of being on your list in first email so they know exactly what to expect in the future.

4. Write your messages as if you were writing to a friend. Make your subscribers feel like you’re writing a personal note, just to them. Use a subject line that looks personal: Hey Bob, I think you’ll like this… Start your message with a personal story (make it short), then move on to the main topic of your email.

5. Get to know your subscribers. Before you start blasting your list with offer for the latest, greatest products that everyone else is pitching, get to know your audience and what THEY want. The easiest way to find out what they want is to simply ask. Have your subscribers send you their most important question about a particular topic or make a post on your blog. Surveys are another great way to find out what people want. Once you know what they are looking for, it’s easier to provide the content that they want and promote the products that they need.

6. Ditch the hype. It’s okay to get excited about a product that you truly believe in. But make sure you always tell the TRUTH about the products you promote. Don’t put a frosty coating on everything. Tell it like it is…good or bad. Your subscribers will love you for it and look forward to every email you send. People buy from people they trust. So when you do send a promotion, they’ll be more likely to buy from you.

7. Be Consistent. You need to contact your list on a regular basis. How often you send emails depends on the type of business you run. If you sell your own products, you may want to send a weekly update. If you promote affiliate products, you may want to send an article or product review every Wednesday to pre-sell your subscribers and then follow up with a promotion the next day. If they know when to expect your emails, then they’re more likely to look out for them on those days.

If you follow these 7 simple steps, you’re sure to build a long-lasting and profitable relationship with your list.

Boost Profits With PHP

Here’s a quick tip that will boost your profits - especially if you’re using verified optin.

After someone subscribes to your list, you have two options:

1. Send them to a thank you page that explains how to verify their subscription to download the free gift. You can add a link to the product you’re promoting. But there’s no guarantee they will click on it. You can also tag them with a cookie, but there’s no guarantee they’ll ever get to the sales page.

2. You can send them straight through your affiliate link to the sales page. This may increase your sales. But they subscriber may feel cheated because they didn’t get a confirmation page. They want their freebie! So that may not put them in the best mood to buy.

Here’s a solution…

Use a simple PHP redirect to show them a confirmation page and then redirect them to the sales page.

How Many Real Assets do You Have in Your Business?

I’ve said this many times before… “If you’re not building a list, you’re not building a business… You’re building someone else’s business.”

But it goes even further than just building a list… The real question is, “Do you have any real assets in your business?”

The Wiktionary defines an asset as: Any component, model, process or framework of value that can be leveraged or reused.

The key words in that definition are “leveraged” and “reused.”

• If you’re just driving traffic from Google to a merchant’s website, you are not building an asset for your business.
• If you depend on surf programs, exchanges and safe lists for your traffic, you are not building an asset for your business.
• If you only advertise in ezines, you are not building an asset for your business.

Don’t get me wrong… You can generate a lot of traffic using the methods above. But once you stop, the traffic stops. If you depend on one source of traffic and that source dries up, so does your cash flow.

You need assets that generate sustainable traffic and sales around the clock whether you work or not. That’s what it’s all about, right? Making money on auto-pilot!

So what kind of assets can you create to build your business?

Asset #1: Your List. Building a responsive mailing list is the best investment you can make in your business. I say, “Investment” because it takes time and money to build a good list. But your efforts will be rewarded ten fold in time.

If Google forces you out of a market or drops your ads, you will still have your list. It’s your asset and no matter what happens, they can’t take that away from you.

And once you build a list of any size, you can leverage that asset in many ways:

• You can swap ads with other list owners to build your list faster.
• You can endorse affiliate products or sell advertising to increase your cash flow.
• You can get feedback on products you may want to create by conducting surveys.

Once you establish yourself as an expert (or at least knowledgeable) on your topic, your subscribers and customers will respect your opinions and advice about the quality products and services you sell.

Asset #2: Your Blog. If you do it right, you can get a ton of free traffic just by publishing to your blog each day.

• If you publish quality content, run contests, or give prizes to your readers, you will get repeat visitors and traffic through word-of-mouth advertising.
• If you target a niche market that’s not too competitive, you can generate free traffic from search engines by using the right keywords in your posts and links.
• If you encourage visitors to comment on your posts, you get other people to add unique original content to your blog.

Publishing a blog is a great way to communicate with your subscribers and customers while building an asset for your business.

Asset #3: Your Articles. An article is an asset because it’s yours. It’s something unique that you create and you can use it any way you wish…

• You can optimize your articles for specific keywords, submit them to article directories, and get free traffic from search engines.
• You can submit your articles to a distribution service and get them published in major ezines for instant quality traffic.
• You can combine your articles and create a viral PDF report to give away to your subscribers.

Now you might be thinking, “But there are tons of PLR articles that I can buy dirt cheap.” Sure, you can buy private label rights to tons of articles for pennies each. I have thousands on my hard drive… Do you want them? They are worthless to me…

99% of the PLR articles and ebooks people are selling are poorly written by people who don’t know the topic at all. I wouldn’t sign my name to a PLR article and an ezine owner would have to be pretty desperate or plain stupid to publish them.

You won’t get much traffic from search engines because Google and Yahoo! Systematically purge duplicate content. Unless you’re the first to get a PLR article listed in the search engines, you won’t see any traffic from your efforts at all.

About the only thing you can do with PLR content is re-write it yourself. But there are much better articles written by experts that you can use “templates” to create your own.

I’ve given you three examples of assets that you can create for your business. There are many more including, viral reports, audio and video reports and reviews. Basically, anything that YOU create that will continue to generate traffic and sales over time is an asset to your business.

How To Find Profitable Products

Once you’ve chosen a profitable market, you need find good affiliate products to promote.

Here’s what to look for:

• High commission (50% - 75%)
• High converting sales letter
• Quality product that you would want to buy
• Proven marketing tools (email ads, graphics, etc.)
• No cost to join

Promote Digital Products For Higher Commissions

I highly recommend that you start out promoting digital products such as information and software. Digital products are available for instant download so there is very little overhead and profit margins are much higher than they are with hard goods.

That’s why merchant’s who sell digital products pay higher commissions. In fact, there are thousands of programs online that will pay you 50% - 75% commission and it costs you nothing to join as an affiliate.

Look for a Sales Letter That Converts

Having said that, not all digital products will make you money just because they pay high commissions. You need a program with a salesletter that converts
visitors into buyers.

So how do you know if a sales letter will convert?

The obvious answer is to read the entire salesletter.  If you’re convinced that the product is worth buying, that’s a pretty good sign that others will buy it too.

Just go to ClickBank and look for products in the $27 - $97 range that pay 50% - 75% commission. A good info product in this price range is easy to sell.

Visit each website and study their marketing. If you’re impressed, add it to your product portfolio.

Record all the details of the product and the affiliate program including the URL of the sales letter and the affiliate tools, commission paid, etc.

You can use the free tool at www.MyAffiliateRolodex.com to keep track of all that data.

So what I want you to do right now is make a list of potential products in your market that you would consider promoting.

How to Get Started in Affiliate Marketing

Here’s a question from David in Australia…

“Derrick, I am very interested in this opportunity. But I doubt I have the knowledge to make it work. I have no list, I have no idea about autoresponders, or how to set up email blasts…I am a complete novice. Do you think I can manage this or best to walk away? You can only do so much to help.”

Here’s my reply…

My advice is to learn how to advertise first. If you try to learn everything at once, you’ll get frustrated and quit. You need to make some money to prove to yourself that affiliate marketing works.The first step is to find an affiliate program that pays well and has a high conversion rate. Look for a program with a hot-selling information product and a good followup system. Then all you have to do is generate traffic.

My system pays 75% commission on three different product. If you drive traffic to my site, you will make money. Maybe not enough to quit your day job. But enough to know that it works.

Once you prove to yourself that affiliate marketing works, then you can start learning how to set up your own system. Working a few hours a day, you could *realistically* make your first $1000 in the next 30 days and have a $10k a month business within one year - that is IF you stick with a plan and don’t waste time jumping from one thing to the next.

How To Set Up Your Follow-Up Sequence to Track Open Rates And Clicks

If you want to get the best results from your followup series, then you need to know which messages are getting opened and which links are clicked.

You can use the tracking features at Aweber to see how many people are opening your messages. Then you can fine-tune your subject lines to increase your
open rate.

To use this feature you need to enable open-rate tracking in list settings. Then you need to format your message in both text and HTML.

I don’t use any formatting in my HTML emails because it’s much more effective when an email appears to be plain text.

Here’s why…

First, if you use bold or colored text, it looks more like a sales letter rather than a personal email.

Second, it becomes obvious you’re reading HTML and the trick I’m about to show you won’t work.

When you’re promoting an affiliate product, you can  enter the actual URL and then link the text to your affiliate link.

For example, if you click the link below, you’ll be taken to a different page on my site:

You can also enable click tracking for each message. That will help you determine which links are getting clicked the most so you can modify your messages to increase your click-through rate.

Combining open-rate tracking and click tracking is a very powerful tool. Plus, it looks better…

Instead of seeing the long, ugly tracking link, your readers simply see the URL to the site.

The easiest way to create the HTML message is to copy and paste the text message and then create a hyper link from the text link. Then copy and paste that link.

In the next issue, I’ll teach you how to set up your follow-up sequence to track open rates and clicks.

I Found $25,422.23 on My Cluttered Desk

I was setting up a new computer for my kids last night. So I had to clean off my desk and move it to the other side of my office.

I knew I had a few checks laying around…but I had no idea there were so many. I found 23 checks totaling $25,422.23!

Learn The Basics Or You’ll Be Chasing Your Tail Forever

Everybody wants a shortcut, a quick fix to their money problems.

I’ve actually heard this more than once, “I need to make x amount in the next two weeks to pay my mortgage. I know nothing about Internet marketing. Will your program do that for me?”

Key words: “Do that for me.”

I think people have seen so many headlines that read, “You can be an overnight success without lifting a finger,” that they actually believe it’s true. And they keep buying product after product thinking they’ll eventually find the one that works.

I’ve asked the people who requested refunds what they didn’t like about my Affiliate Cash Secrets system. The reply is always either, “It’s just the same old stuff,” or “I don’t think I can do it.”

The truth is, they’re just too lazy to make it work.

I’ll be the first to admit. Affiliate Cash Secrets is based on the same marketing principals that have been working for direct marketers on and off line for the last 50 years!

1. Get a list of leads in a target market
2. Sell a product that the market wants
3. Follow up with related products and services

First of all, you simply have to get your own domain and hosting if you ever want to be successful online. Period.

Sure. There are a lot of automated websites that claim you can just “point and click” your way to wealth. Don’t believe it. You need to be in control of your business. And when you finally realize it, you’ll have to move everything over (if they let you) from “easy street” to reality and start building a real business.

If you want to set up a squeeze page, you have to learn:

• How to use an HTML editor
• How to use an autoresponder
• How to integrate your subscription form
• How to use FTP software

All that is “basic” stuff. Unless you have deep pockets to pay somebody to do all this for you, these are skills that you MUST possess if you want to ever get anywhere with your business.

And guess what…you don’t have to pay anything to learn this stuff. You can find dozens for free tutorials online.

Just go to Google and enter: video tutorial topic (where “topic” is what you want to learn about).

If you want to sell a resell rights product, you have to learn how to set up a ClickBank or PayPal account. There are tutorials for that…

If you want to create a PDF document you have to learn how to use a word processor and PDF Printer. There are tutorials for that…

I you want to make your PDF viral, you have to learn how to use Viral PDF. There are tutorials for that…

When I first started online in 1997, there were very few tutorials. There were no forums. I had to learn almost everything through trial and error.

I spent at least 10 hours per day learning how to use Microsoft Word, FrontPage, Photoshop, and WSFTP. I learned how to build websites and use autoresponders and eventually how to program in Perl, JavaScript, and PHP.

I put in over 200 hours before I ever made a dime.

Fortunately, you won’t have to spend that much time learning because there is so much more information available today to help you get started.

Ten years ago, there were like three ebooks on Internet marketing that you could download. The rest were expensive home study courses – actual printed manuals!

ClickBank didn’t even exist back then! Want to see what their site looked like when they started in 1999? Go to Archive.org and type in their domain name.

The point of this article is this: if you’ve been “chasing your tail” trying to find the “magic bullet” that will build your business for you, it’s time to get back to reality and learn the basics so you can finally get started.

Liposuction for Internet Marketers

Do you know why the weight loss market is so profitable? Because just like the “make money online” group wants to push a button and get rich, people want a “magic pill” to lose weight.

Let me ask you something…

If you wanted to lose 5 pounds of pure fat and you knew you could do it in 6 weeks, would you follow the diet and exercise plan to make it happen?

It’s a lot of hard work and you keep getting side-tracked by advertisement for weight loss pills, ab machines, or Britney Spears’ secret diet.

Questions About Traffic?

I have some answers for you…

There are basically three ways to get traffic:

1. You can buy it
2. You can work for it
3. You can leverage it

Buying pay-per-click ads, solo ads in ezines, and even banner ads are all great ways to get targeted traffic…but I don’t recommend you get started that way for two reasons:

1. It’s very easy burn $100 on pay-per-click ads and not make one sale (I know, I’ve done it).

2. Once you stop advertising, the traffic stops.

You need to use low-risk strategies that build streams of traffic that never stop…

The strategies I teach in the 30-Day Challenge are proven to generate consistent traffic to
your website.

Hey, you may have seen them before…but have you actually implemented the strategies?

Let’s look at article marketing…

* You write an article (or you pay someone to do it) that has a resource box at the bottom with a link to your squeeze page.

* You submit your article to high-traffic ezine directories and thousands of small directories using an automated submission service.

* Your article gets published on couple hundred sites to start. After a few weeks your article will be on thousands of websites with YOUR link at the bottom.

Now imagine 100 of your articles on thousands of sites all pointing back to your site.

That should generate some traffic, right?

And it’s traffic that doesn’t stop. Do the work once and benefit forever.

But that’s just the beginning…

Once you build a list, you can use it as LEVERAGE to joint venture with other list owners to build an even bigger list!

Selecting a Product to Promote - Part One

The most important (and often overlooked) point to consider when selecting a product to sell is: how does the product fulfill the needs of your customers?

For example, jewelry stores don’t sell diamonds; they sell romance and sex. They know what women want…to love and be loved. And men like to think they know what women want…so they buy diamonds.

Pharmaceutical companies don’t sell cold medicine; they sell relief from sinus pain, cough, and a runny nose.

Throughout history, people have sought out the same basic things:

• Wealth
• Happiness
• Safety
• Health
• Beauty
• Love
• Security
• Sex
• Power
• Longevity
• Recognition

So while you’re brainstorming ideas for a product to promote, keep the desires of your customer in mind. When you’re evaluating a product, ask yourself, “How does this product fulfill any of those essential needs?”

Another important consideration is your interests. While it’s not entirely necessary, it’s a lot easier to sell something you’re passionate about.

In 1989, Marsha Sinetar released a book called Do What You Love and The Money Will Follow. Although I don’t completely agree with that statement (I know a lot of poor people who love their jobs), it will help you create better marketing materials if you at least have an interest in the subject.

Choose a product that you understand well or are willing to learn about, so that you appear as an authority on the subject. People buy from people they trust. And if you serve your customers with honesty and integrity, your efforts will be justly rewarded.

Select a product that you can get excited about and sincerely want to share with others. Your excitement will shine through in your endorsements and your sales increase dramatically!

Seven Elements Of A Killer Squeeze Page

If you want to maximize your opt-in conversion rate, you need to apply the seven elements for a killer squeeze page.

1. Compelling Headline: you have about three seconds to grab the attention of your visitor and give them a reason to stay and read what you have to say before they click away to the next site. Especially if you’re advertising on traffic exchanges other related websites.
2. Bullet List of Benefits: once you’ve got their attention, you’ve got to keep it by telling exactly what your freebie is going to do and how it’s going to help them get what they want.
3. Strong Call to Action: next you need to tell them what to do and how to get what you’re offering. For example, “Enter you name and email below for instant access.”
4. Opt-In Form: this may seem obvious, but the placing of the form is what’s important. It should be “above the fold” for best results. And the submit button should also use text like “Click Here For Instant Access” instead of just “Submit.”
5. Email Notice: you need to give an incentive or a reason to enter a real email address.  Note that the download link will be sent to their email inbox or they will need to confirm to get the download.
6. Privacy Statement: ensure your subscribers that their information will not be shared with anyone and that you respect their privacy.
7. Trust Seal: an easy way to increase conversions is by placing a trust seal on your site to let your visitors know that you do business with honesty and integrity. For example, I use the Honest Online button on my site.

Besides those seven elements, good formatting, nice graphics, and a professional design will go a long way to increase your conversion rates. But for most direct response squeeze pages, a simple page with a white background and black text will do just fine.

The #1 Thing Standing Between You and Success

Do you know what the #1 thing standing between you being the next great ‘overnight’ success story is?

If you said not having the right information, I’d have to totally disagree because there is so much info available today it will make your head spin.

How about not having the right product to sell?

Every time you turn around there’s another guru with another magic pill for you to swallow…

• another teleseminar to attend…
• another eBook for you…
• another blog or forum to join…
• another squeeze page for a newsletter or eCourse that promises to put you on the path.

Don’t get me wrong, there is more and better info and resources available today than EVER before (but that’s a double edged sword because even though there’s never been more ingenious methods to make money today, you still gotta get started).

There’s just too many choices, right?

And, let’s face it… we’re all different people with different goals, different wants and desires for our lives and families, different backgrounds, different experiences, different challenges, and different ideas of what success looks like for us, right?

Because of that not every solution will work for everyone.

It’s about finding the one that works for you and your life. It’s got to fit you instead of you trying to fit yourself to it, right?

And, most importantly of all, at least in my opinion, is you’ve got to *FOCUS*

• Focus on something small so you can actually reach it and start feeling good about yourself instead beating yourself up for not being further along….

• Focus on small bite sized steps that you can do so you’re never left wondering what to do next…

• Focus on not getting distracted once you’ve set your course so nothing takes you away from what you’ve decided to do…

• Focus on taking the **first step** (that’s right for you) because once you start the action chain-reaction (with the right focus) you’ll find that the next steps will become crystal clear…

• Focus on what will take you to *YOUR* biz goals (not what someone else thinks is best for you)

So how do you do all that without your head exploding?

Well, I’ve found something that I think might just hold the answer for many, Many, MANY of you (it won’t be right for everyone because it can’t be all things to all people but the people who’s style this does fit will love the clarity and the results they get from what I’m about to unveil).

But you’re gonna have to wait to find out more…

Relax…

Because you’ll only have to wait till tomorrow (we are putting the finishing touches on everything right now).

The Money is in The List…Right?

Everybody says, “The money is in the list…” Well, that’s not exactly true - it’s not the whole truth anyway.

The biggest obstacle you face when you publish an ezine is the fact that people have gotten used to getting junk (from your competitors) disguised as helpful information.

Many publishers write about every new trend (and the underlying product) because their writing from a mentality of “I gotta get paid” and when you do that, you completely forget about the people you’re writing to and start to concentrate on you and what you want.

That’s a surefire recipe for disaster…

Whenever you write anything for your subscribers, don’t write with the sole intention of getting a check. Getting checks is nice but your business lives or dies based on how many people believe you genuinely want to help them achieve their goals.

Show your readers that you value them enough to part with real, quality information and that you see them as more than just a dollar sign. Otherwise, you’re going to be lumped into a group with all the rest of your competitors with a big sign on your forehead marked “Will Do Anything For Commissions”.

Responsive readers come from a conscious effort to build a solid relationship with them. People connect with other people. Not mindless robots that only want commission checks.

Now don’t get me wrong.

I’d love for you to buy the products I recommend, but I’m not going to force that on you. When I do enough of the right things in your eyes, I will have earned the right to ask you for your money in the form of commission checks from other products and services that I not only recommend, but truly believe in.

The point is…I have to earn that right by giving up good information that is of actual use to you. When you write anything you expect other people to read, the same thing applies to you.

If you’re going to create information full of affiliate links then you’re completely missing the point of what it takes to get people to value what you have to say.

I’ve done that in the past and it is nowhere near as effective. If you want people to eagerly anticipate your next email with every intention of jumping on any products or services you recommend, you have to earn their trust first by giving quality information without asking for anything in return.

The Myth Of Effortless Success

Let me ask you something…

How many money-making, life-altering packages have you bought in the last few months or years?

Do you now have the success that you bought those packages to achieve?

Maybe you do. Maybe you don’t. I’ll let you in on a little secret…

Almost anyone can make money using any of the moneymaking packages you’ll find on the net.

People do it every single day.

The reason is because they understand that nothing “magical” will happen just because they bought the latest and greatest life-changing product.

These people understand that consistent effort is what will set them apart from the thousands who get nothing from the very same products they use to make more in a month than most people make in a year.

You would be surprised to know the kind of money some people are making with simple products that others say are worthless.

It’s your mentality that counts. How you think about the world around you determines your reality in it. Not everyone walking around on this planet operates from the same reality you do.

People with failing businesses “know” it’s hard to get to the top and people at the top “know” it’s easy for anyone to get to the top if they’re willing to work hard on the right things to get there.

Many of the obstacles holding you back were placed there by you and what you believe to be true. A lot of times, you may be the one who is creating the very “rut” you complain about being in.

It’s not really your fault because you’re probably blind to the truth…

Taking action and working hard is only part of the equation.

You can try twisting a screw into a board with your fingers as hard as you can all day long but I think you’d probably be better off using a screwdriver. In other words, working hard in the wrong way won’t get anything done even though there’s the appearance of action.

You have to find the right vehicle to get you where you want to be. Only then will action and hard work lead to your success.

In this business, anything that’s already been proven to work will get you where you want to go. All you have to do is hitch a ride.

The Truth About Success

I’m about to address one of the biggest obstacles standing in the way of you making money right now.

Being successful at anything you choose to do requires hard work and consistency. I know that in the Internet marketing field, use of those words is a big no-no, but it’s the undeniable truth.

Without an understanding that you may have to work for your success you might think there’s some secret formula out there that’s going to magically put money in your pockets simply because you know it.

All you have to do is look at how many products you’ve bought with the expectation that if you bought it, you would be able to turn your business around with the “new secrets” you thought you were going to learn to see I’m telling the truth.I know you’ve seen some people who have hit the net full speed with their first product and had all kinds of crazy success.

Many times it’s a fluke and it’s not something that person can ever reproduce because since their first product launch did so well, they get trapped into thinking that what they did was easy, forgetting all they time and effort they put into everything that got them there.
